NZ flag referendum

WALT: use our plan to write a discussion text, which tells the history of the flag, and both points of view.

Success Criteria:
  • Has an introduction which tells us what the text is going to be about.
  • Has one paragraph explaining the history of the flag
  • Has one paragraph explaining why we should keep the flag
  • Has one paragraph explaining why we should change the flag.
  • Has a conclusion saying what your opinion is on the flag debate and why

Model introduction:
Between the 3rd-24th March 2016 there will be a referendum held in New Zealand as to whether we should officially change the flag. A referendum is when the public (over 18) are asked to vote on a question from the government about our nation. The public will be deciding between the current NZ flag and the Silver Fern Flag.

The history of the flag
New Zealand has had a very unique flag history. The first official flag was designed by James Busby. He and a team of twenty five got together and then came up with three flags and then had a vote. The first out of the three flags we flew was the united tribes of New Zealand flag, which was voted the best flag. Later in the 1800’s all the boats from the colony had to fly the blue ensign flag otherwise they would be impounded. With that flag we put the letters NZ on it. This was the second official flag. In 1869 the current flag was designed, and in 1902 it was the third official flag that we called our own.

Reasons to keep the flag
There are a lot of reasons to keep the flag. I don’t think that we should change the flag because our soldiers fought with that flag. It is one of the only ways to remember their bravery and service to our country. We have had that flag for so long and most countries recognize us by it. We flew our flag at all our competitions. All the records not only sports ones think of all the things we have done and that flag represents us at all of them. All that money think of all the poar children that don’t get food. We could of got them so much food and equipment to help them survive And grow up and experience the world.

Reasons to change the flag
Here are some reasons to change the flag. If we change the flag we would be different to Australia and people would not get muddled up between us. Now we will  be recognized in a different way instead of been the same as Australia. The silver fern represents us because it is our native plant. Some countries already think of us as the silver ferns and don’t know who our flag belongs to. The white in the flag represents peace and NZ has a lot of peace.

Conclusion

My Opinion is to keep the flag. I think we should keep the flag because it has been around so long what would our ancestor think. They would want to keep the flag. Look at what we have done with that flag.
